Minecraft Survival Guides

Step-by-Step Survival Help For Beginners

Need help surviving your first night? Our beginner-friendly guides walk you through essential survival strategies.

1. When you spawn into the world, the first thing you want to do is find a tree and start punching it with your fists to pick up the wood. I would suggest you start out getting 4 blocks of wood. On from there, you can take the wood and use it to make some planks. Use the planks to make some sticks. What is great about the UPI of Minecraft is it shows you how to craft things visually and shows how much of each item you need.

2. Gather all of your materials to make some tools. I would suggest to make a sword, shovel, picaxe, and an axe. With these tools, you can mine anything easily. Start by mining some stone underground to get some cobblestone. Once you have the cobblestone, you can then craft stone tools and upgrade them from your wooden tools.

3. Mine with your stone tools underground to look for some iron ore. Getting iron is essential when you first start out, but it is not really needed right away since we want to get you going and surviving the first night. Only thing we will need it for right away is to make shears. With these shears, we can find sheep and get their wool from them. We can then craft a bed to use when we are about to sleep

4. Night time comes pretty quickly in Minecraft. It is essential we gathered all of these materials when we first spawned into our world. Once it gets dark, it is pretty dangerous. Skeletons, creepers, zombies, phantoms all come out at night and are looking for their next victim to attack. I wanted to say this first to warn of what is about to come when it hits dark. The final thing you should do is to build a temporary shelter. It does not matter what blocks you have in your inventory. A simple 5x5 square house with your bed placed down is all you need at the moment.

5. Once you have the first night all covered, you are ready to be on your own and start mining some more.

How to Find Diamonds

I see people all the time wondering "How can I get diamonds?" It is the first thing they want to get as it is one of the most valuable materials in the game. Plus it looks good on you when you make armor and tools. As I mentioned in the how to survive the first night guide, you will have to find yourself some iron ingots. I suggest finding and mining 12 iron ores and that will make you 4 iron ingots. The only way to mine diamonds is with an iron pic. Next thing to do is hit f3 on your keyboard. This brings up coords of the world. The level to find diamonds at underground are at y level -59 to -64. Once you are down to those levels, the best way to search for them is to do strip mining. Go in multiple directions and keep mining until you find some.

Another way to easily find them is to use caves. Some caves are big and you can travel them looking for various resources. You want to make sure the caves are around these same levels or deeper to find the diamonds.

Basic Redstone Tutorial

Redstone Farm

Redstone doesn't have to be scary! This part of the game is really cool because you can build a lot of contraptions to help with your game. Some of these include making trap doors, secret entrances and using redstone for automatic farming. There are endless possibilities. Some simple ones you can do to start out are making automatic light switches. Put a redstone torch on the wall, dig behind it and have redstone dust leading to behind it. Cover up the wall and place a lever next to the torch and bam, you got a lightswitch you can turn on and off.

The next thing you can do it create an automatic farm. Instead of farming your crops by hand, you can easily set up something automatically by using redstone. First off, start by setting up some land and clear out a space that is 8x8. Place some water in the middle as it will cover the ground comepletely and the soil will get moist. Next, use a hoe to turn up the grass and make it farmable soil. Place some droppers side by side next to each other and put water buckets in each of them. Next is to put repeaters behind each of the droppers and have redstone dust behind those repeaters. The dust can travel alongside the farm and put next to a lever. Once you hit the lever, the water will come out breaking the crops and the veggies will then flow down to the end of where the water stops. You can then collect all of your food and seeds and then use those seeds to be planted again to make some more crops. The water wont go away in those droppers, so you wont have to worry about replenishing it.
